Evening is a perfect time for drinking tea. Tea with biscuits is perfect much or we can served it with fried banana (banana fritters). Chinese and Japanese has a special rituals on drinking tea. Tea is a culture in China. Chinese like to spend so much time and money on quality tea.

Have you ever wonder which country producing tea in this world? Which country the biggest exporter of tea?

It was surprising to read on the China Daily yesterday that according to  2010 the top exporter of tea is Kenya followed by China, Srilanka, India and Argentina.  I was wondering what is my country position as an exporter now.

When I was in the final year study in University, My first job as an external auditor is auditing a plantation firm which includes Tea Plantation.  I was informed that Indonesia is in the Top three. The world has changed. It’s not surprising that Indonesia not the top three anymore, I see that there is no serious effort in developing this plantation. In my humble opinion this commodity has a good market and it does not need a lot of skills. They prefer to convert the land for Villa or rest house which only occupy once a week or less.

Data from London-based International Tea Committee shows that in 2011 Top 5 Importer of Tea is Marocco, US, Uzbekistan, Japan and Russia whereas in 2010 the top 5 Importer are Russia, US, UK, Pakistan, Egypt.

Top country in term of Tea Consumption per capita in 2010 (unit in kilogram)  Kuwait 2,86, Ireland 2.31, Turkey 2.02 , Afghannistan 2.01, UK 1.97. I think most people prefer switch from drinking tea to mineral water or soft drink for practical reason. Tea usually drink while it hot. So it will need sometime to prepare it, although nowadays there are a lot of tea bags. There are bottled tea Indonesia, now they also produce in cartoon.

For the past few years green tea become so popular as a drink. From body lotion, shampoo and food (ice cream, cake) use green tea as a flavor. Recently US based coffee giant Starbucks has launched a variety of tea-related products

Why does green tea gain a popularity? studies in US and China suggest that green tea can help reduced the risk of contracting certain type of cancer, illness that can caused cognitive impairment such as strokes, and osteoporosis in the elderly.

What kind of tea actually that can have this benefits. Studies shown that the maximum antioxidant benefit are derived from freshly brewed loose-leaf tea and that tea from bags loses much of its antioxidant value once it’s brewed. Diane Walden , co-founder of California Tea and Coffee Brewery in Los Angeles said that the tea in bags is usually the ‘dust’ or ‘fanning’ the lowest grade of tea.

China has around 1500 varieties of tea (Zang Yuchen – China Daily) . They are divided into seven main categories:

Green tea: It has historically been Asia’s most famous tea and is popular in the west as well. The secret of green tea is that it is rich in antioxidant sucatechin polyphenols, specifically epigallocatechin gallate, that fight cancer without negative effects. There are indications that drinking green tea reduces cholesterol levels and may help to control blood clots.

Black tea, Oolong tea, Pu’er tea, White tea, Yellow tea and Scented tea . In the Market they sold in some Brands. There are famous tea bags from England, Lipton Tea. In Malaysia there are a lot of brand for tea. I believe because it’s historical connection with British, Now Malaysia has variety of tea products with flavor. Like Lemon, Strawberry, peach.

Enjoy your tea. and stay healthy

  1. Surprising statistics! One strange thing about Lipton’s tea is that we don’t have it in the UK. It’s very odd, I’ve seen it all over the world sold as a British tea, but the Brits don’t drink it.

    • Well, that’s means British Brand is really selling. To some people buying product which carry British label will increase their self esteem 🙂
You, here in Indonesia people always trying to get something from Mark and Spencer which actually their product are produced somewhere else, outside British.
      Thanks for visiting my blog.

  2. I can understand the lure of Marks and Spencer, I like to buy things there too. That is definitely a very big brand in the UK, with a reputation for quality. It is a British brand, but as you say, there are branches all over the world and I don’t know where all their stuff is produced.

  3. Thank you for your blog! I had no idea the bagged tea carried less nutrients. I have been ill for awhile now and been thinking of trying green tea. I think I will pick up loose green tea on next pay day 🙂
    ~Blessings to you
